A gang of unidentified thieves decamped with electronic equipment worth Rs.15 to 20 lakh during the wee hours of Tuesday. The robbery was the latest in the spate of house break-ins in Bhimanagar area. The local residents have expressed concern about the rising incidents of thefts from residential and commercial establishments in the area”.
We read about such robberies in the media almost every day. Most robberies occur during the nights or in the wee hours. However, it is astounding that phenomenal daylight robberies have not only increased innumerably throughout the Country but also go un-noticed by the public, media and the police. The robberies rampantly increase between December and May each year. More than 500 daylight robberies were reported in a single month from the cities of Ghaflath Nagar and Uskebad.
The modus-operandi of such robberies is mentioned below in view of public awareness, safety and security:
In a recent daring daylight robbery, a 20 year-old woman was allegedly robbed off her gold valuables comprising a chain, necklaces, bracelet, finger-rings and several pairs of bangles by the culprits. Apart from this, furniture, electronic items and cash was also taken away. All this happened in the presence of families at a function hall.
In a majority of such incidents, the occupants of the house are forced to handover property, cash, jewelry, furniture including vehicles. The bandits who rob in the night are usually uneducated and unemployed. However it was noticed that these daylight robberies are being carried out even by the employed, and educated strata of the society including NRIs.
It is astonishing that there’s neither outrage from the public nor headlines in the media and no action is being taken by the Police. The entire society seems to be numb in spite of these robberies and atrocities happening every day.
When contacted, the police said that they have no penal code under which they can take any action and also no complaints are filed with them against anybody. It was shocking to learn that apart from the loot, the culprits also take away a girl from the household who would be held captive for the rest of her life under the designation of “Daughter In-Law. She would normally be carrying out all household chores for the bandit family. The police further said that the victims register complaints only when their daughters are harassed for insufficient loot known as “Dowry”. Many a times, the bandit families kill their captives if the wedding ransom was not paid in full or as per their demands.
Those who do not seek permission and take away the valuables are referred to as dacoits and those who forcefully take away a person are called as kidnappers. The willingness and permission granted in these daylight robberies by the victims has made this crime justifiable at a social event called “The Wedding” and the culprit is hugged as he becomes the “Son-In-Law”. In the former case, the ransom is paid to the kidnappers in a secluded place whereas the wedding ransom is paid at a small party held at the victim’s house or at the time of wedding. As a matter of fact, even the victims seem to rejoice as these are mutually agreed upon and arranged marriages.
Are you from one of those victims who happily agrees to pay the ransom along with your daughter or are you the educated and employed bandit who’s waiting to victimize another family? Both of you are committing the same crime which has tarnished the society and forced it into corruption and several other social evils.
We all make choices each day such as our favorite soap, toothpaste, restaurant, dress etc. However, there are some major choices in life that cannot be made irresponsibly. You have a choice to make that affects your life long journey. Either you choose to live like a sheep by following the customs and traditions that have jeopardized the society or live like a Lion by defying the obsolete customs and declaring that you have sufficient funds for your clothing, furniture, home appliances and other necessities of life as you are the provider not a dependent. Instead of listening to the loud voice of the Society to accept dowry, do listen to the silent voice of millions of parents who are suffering due to this malady that has made their daughter’s marriage a huge financial burden. Also listen to the feeble cries of all those women who are victimized and or abused by their husbands and in-laws for lack of insufficient dowry. I hope you’ll make a responsible choice in your life.
It is said that “every single drop of water makes a mighty ocean”. Now its your turn to propagate this breaking news so that we bring more awareness on this social crime and succeed to have even the sheep in lion’s clothing.
