My Name is Fan

The origin of the hand fan is uncertain but Egyptians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks  and Romans used fans to blow air and to scare away the insects. The earliest electric fans appeared in 1880. The blade designs were changed during 1900 and much improvements were made thereafter.

As technology improved we have been made to sit on the desk, stand on the floor or hang onto the wall or the ceiling and have been used for a variety of purposes that we are exhausted (exhaust fans).  We are glad that we do not have any differences of color, caste, creed or religion.  We are used by all faiths. We provide cooling during summers and heat during winters, drive out smoke from the kitchens, smell from the bathrooms, check humidity and last but not the least we are used to decorate.

However, what has made us truly remarkable throughout the globe is our association with various Celebrities.  Each celebrity claims to have thousands or millions of fans and the truth of the matter is that they have only Air-Conditioners in their homes, offices, cars and everywhere they go.  We are not angry or displeased with this situation but are glad that we have been made popular even without our existence.

 Celebrity fans

Let alone human beings, we are now most sought after even on the websites.  This has been very remarkable for us as we don’t need to be present and serve physically anymore.  We once needed electricians to install us but today even a click of a mouse can install us anywhere.  No need for electricity,  no bills and people just chill.

A majority of the middle class families who dislike the air conditioners buy and install us.  Well, we do our job and give them the service they need.  In these small and beautiful homes, our joy has no bounds when we see newly married women operating us.  We provide the new brides with cool breeze and the comfort that they need during the anxious moments of their wedding journey.

We also wonder about some of the peculiar reasons for which they use us.  Among the various uses, they also use us after having a discussion with their Mothers-in-law, before going to a wedding, after coming from a party, after having an argument with their hubby, after scolding their children, while watching Ekta Kapoor’s Serials on Star Plus or while watching RGV’s horror flicks.

Our legacy is improving by the day.  However, as they say, even the moon has scars, we sometimes live a very guilty life and are mute spectators to crimes that are beyond our control.  Death by fan is a widely held belief in South Korea.  All of us fans in South Korea have an automatic timer to turn us off after some time.  People believe that sleeping in a closed room can cause death by asphyxiation or hypothermia.  I wish they check from other Asians who sleep peacefully for the rest of the night.

The greatest tragedy to unfold on us is the barbaric behavior and  monetary expectations by the In-laws that force young brides to hang on us and end their lives.  We have never ever seen any perpetrators dying out of shame for their misdeeds, corruption and evil practices that have tarnished the Society.  We would be pleased to hang all those who have burdened the Society with myriad social evils.

We are also very concerned with those students who take their lives for not securing a higher rank or grade in their studies.  They have a multitude of choices that will make their lives successful and meaningful.   As a matter of fact, they are not to be blamed but the parents.  Parents lay so much stress on marks and grades that their children are forced to end their lives for not achieving the desired results.

We humbly request the brides, students and all those desperate people who lose hope to please, please reconsider your decisions.  Life is the most precious gift of God and you need not end it abruptly.  You have a million choices to live the best life that you desire.

“In the long run, we shape our lives, and we shape ourselves. The process never ends until we die. And the choices we make are ultimately our own responsibility”       Eleanor Roosevelt

whosoever strives to contribute towards mitigating the evils of the Society, I would love to become their fan and I’m a fan by birth.

Do you wish to contribute your might to the Society?  Be the Change!

May you all live a cool life with peace and happiness.

Your Sincere Fan.
